I was inspired to make this piece because I needed to express a very intense emotion. Horses like any other animal have a very strong hierarchy and are often tested, resulting in fighting. I used charcoal to show this altercation because I wanted to be able to push the contrast around each horse and make it look as though they were frozen in time. This piece pushed me to find new ways to emphasize the values as the coats on the horses had varying tonal values that I wanted to keep accurate.
